If you’ve heard enough positive things about acupuncture to make you consider booking an appointment but can’t quite let go of apprehension surrounding the process, you’re not alone. Many people are curious about acupuncture but hesitant to try it out due to concern over what their first appointment will be like.

What to Expect from Your Acupuncture Appointment: A First-Time Patient Guide

At Active Integrative Medicine, we aim to make our patients feel as comfortable and informed as possible, so we put together this step-by-step guide to help you prepare and feel confident for your first acupuncture appointment.

  1. Initial Consultation – We start your session with an open conversation about your health history, current concerns, and overall wellness goals. Acupuncture is a highly personalized treatment, so we make sure we fully grasp your symptoms, lifestyle, and any conditions you’re currently managing before we start. We encourage you to ask questions and talk at length with your provider.
  1. Physical Examination – We’ll perform a short physical assessment, which may include looking at your tongue and feeling your pulse on both wrists. Don’t worry—this assessment is quick and should cause no discomfort.
  1. Acupuncture Needle Placement – When it’s time for treatment to begin, we will have you sit or lie down on a comfortable table for the needle placement. The placement of the needles is determined by the concerns you are visiting us to address. We know what you’re thinking: “Will this hurt?” The answer is, in short, no. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and always sterile—some patients report a slight pinch or pressure during insertion, but the sensation typically fades quickly.
  1. Relaxation – You can expect to spend between 20 to 30 minutes with the needles in place, and during this time, you will enjoy a calm, relaxing environment. This is a great time to focus on deep relaxation—many of our patients even fall asleep!
  1. Post-Treatment – Once the needles are removed, we’ll have a brief check-in about how you’re feeling. The effects of acupuncture are cumulative, so while you may feel an immediate sense of calm and pain relief, we recommend multiple sessions for the best results. Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity right after your session to give your body time to adjust and heal.
