Active Release Therapy

What is Active Release Therapy?

Active Release Therapy (ART) is a treatment technique for soft tissue injuries (muscles, nerves, tendons and fascia surrounding the muscles) with the goal of restoring the smooth movement of tissues and to release any entrapped nerves or blood vessels. ART involves stretching muscles and tendons and applying pressure to break down scar tissue or adhesions that have accumulated over time due to injury or overuse.

Adhesion and scar tissue prevent normal smooth movement of tissues and can lead to chronic inflammation, pain, joint stress, fluid accumulation, poor circulation or low oxygen and nerve entrapment. ART helps to release these adhesions, increase the flow of blood, decrease pain and increase function, flexibility and mobility of the affected area.

Conditions that can benefit from ART:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Chronic back pain
  • Knee problems
  • Joint dysfunction
  • Repetitive strains
  • Muscle sprain
  • Shin splints
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tennis elbow
