The Importance of a Protein-Rich Diet

The Importance of a Protein-Rich Diet

As a key macronutrient of the human body, protein is vital in maintaining overall health and well-being. It’s an important component of every cell in the body, from our hair and nails to our muscles, bones, and cartilage. Including building muscle and repairing tissues, protein plays a huge role in how well our body functions and has many health benefits.

Benefits of Consuming a High-Protein Diet

Increases Muscle Mass:  Muscle is made up primarily of protein and therefore is crucial when it comes to building muscle and increasing overall strength. A high protein intake also prevents muscle loss when the body is in a catabolic state, allowing you to maintain muscle while losing weight.

Promotes Health of Bones: More protein in the diet helps to keep bones healthy and strong, especially in older aged individuals. It helps to prevent the risk of osteoporosis as well as the chance of fracturing bones.

Boosts Metabolism and Fat Burning: Eating any type of food causes your metabolism to boost for a short period of time. This is due to the body digesting it and making use of the nutrients. However, foods are different in this regard as some boost metabolism for longer or shorter depending on their thermic effect. When considering protein, we see that it has a high thermic effect, meaning that a high-protein diet helps to boost your body’s metabolism for longer and burn more calories throughout the day.

Reduces Hunger Levels: Of the three macronutrients, protein is able to make you feel more full for a longer period of time. This is in part due to protein reducing the hunger hormone ghrelin, allowing your appetite to be reduced. A reduced appetite is beneficial as it will help you feel satisfied for longer and avoid over eating or indulging in less healthy foods.

With all of its benefits, it’s easy to see why protein is so important in our diet. Along with its health benefits, one important thing to remember about protein is that unlike the other macronutrients (fat and carbohydrates), the body doesn’t store it. Therefore, there is no reservoir to draw from when your body is in need of more, making the consumption of a high-protein diet pivotal.

Luckily, at the AIM Clinic we take any uncertainty or guessing out of protein consumption with our Ideal Protein program. The program is a medically developed weight loss and weight management protocol that we offer consisting of four phases. The program involves purchasing pre-portioned, pre-packaged Ideal Protein foods specifically formulated so they’re low in carbohydrates and fat. There are two main components of this protocol – weight loss and a healthier lifestyle education so that you are empowered to sustain your weight loss results over your life course.
